My Name is…

Romy Louise van Schooneveld. I grew up in Kesteren, a small town in the Netherlands. As soon as I left to go study International Business in Amsterdam, I came to the realization that there was more out there and that nothing stopped me from exploring it. It didn’t take long before wild plans started taking shape and I left for 7 months to South-America. There, at the age of 19 I bought my first proper DSLR camera and started “playing” around. My Canon and I became closer everyday and soon I started to understand its needs, wants and all its tiny buttons.

Today we are inseparable; together we go everywhere and try to take an impression of ‘everywhere’ home.

“What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that is gone forever. Impossible to reproduce.”

It is my aim to make photography fun for both myself as well as the person in front of the camera. To me that means that I enjoy it to put my camera aside and really be part of whatever situation I am in. In my believe that is when you can really get creative and enable people to open up.

Needless to say, the approach depends on the type of photography, as there is little time for this with sports photography.

What People Say About Me

Romy's photographs are more than just a picture! Her ability to capture a moment which tells a story and enthuses the viewer into critical thought and appreciation, is what makes her a professional photographer with multi-dimensional envisioning abilities. A cut above "takers of many pictures", Romy took photos for Dreamcatcher of life as lived in communities at grass roots and of exceptional sports events.

-Anthea Rossouw (Dreamcatcher South Africa)

"Romy’s ability to capture and transfer the emotion of a moment is extraordinary. Her photos show an intimate and personal relationship with the topic and her well trained eye captures the subject with curiosity and love. You’re not looking at any other photograph or moment, you are looking at a hidden moment you would otherwise not have noticed. Her photos stand out, they stick in your mind and change your own perception. In today's world where photography is completely immersed with ordinary life and an average person takes around 100 photo’s a week, Romy’s pictures tell the difference between just looking and actually seeing."

-Anna Tiggelaar (ChildsLife International)
